Who We Are
The Cardiovascular Research Centre (CRC), University of Abuja is Nigeria’s leading hub for cardiovascular and metabolic research.
The Cardiovascular Research Centre (CRC) at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital is a dedicated hub for research, training and innovation in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Based in a new purpose-built facility in Gwagwalada, the Centre houses clinical, data and administrative teams working side by side to deliver high-quality, policy-relevant research.
We focus on the conditions driving Nigeria’s cardiovascular burden, especially hypertension and its complications, using methods that are rigorous, collaborative and grounded in real-world care.
Our story
A Decade of Growth: The Evolution of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital
CRC began as a cardiovascular research unit in 2015 and was upgraded in 2024 with the commissioning of an ultra-modern Cardiovascular Research Centre building at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. The new facility, with dedicated data and administrative sections, reflects a long-term commitment to advancing cardiovascular research, training and patient care in Nigeria.
Strategic Pillars
We design and implement clinical trials, observational cohorts and implementation studies focused on hypertension, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias and cardio-metabolic risk, in both hospital and community settings
We train and mentor residents, fellows, nurses, data professionals and early-career researchers in epidemiology, biostatistics, implementation science, health economics and scientific writing
We partner with ministries, regulators and global organisations to generate evidence for guidelines, national programmes and scalable models of cardiovascular and metabolic care
Vision
To be a continental leader in cardiovascular and metabolic research, generating knowledge that transforms prevention, diagnosis and treatment and strengthens health systems in Nigeria and across Africa.
Our Mission
To conduct high-quality, collaborative and innovative research that improves prevention, early detection and treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases; to translate evidence into practice and policy; and to train the next generation of scientists and clinicians who will lead this work.
